THE 300’ FOLSOM TRAIL MURAL PROJECT is completed!

The Folsom Trail Mural Project supported a local west-side team of artists, the Roots Art Kollective, to create a piece that acknowledges City Creek, beautifies the Folsom Trail corridor, and represents the Euclid/Poplar Grove neighborhood. Completed in September 2023, the mural fills the nearly 300-foot-long wall at 25 S 1000 W, Salt Lake City, UT 84104, overlooking the Folsom Trail.

Words about the piece from the artist team: “We used hands holding/picking up water as a symbol of respect and appreciation for its ability to create life. This symbol can be interpreted as giving or receiving life. The design includes intricate patterns of blues (flow) and circles (clouds) to express the impact of water and its never-ending movement. The blue and orange flower of life emphasizes our interconnectedness and symbiotic relationship with water. At the right end of the wall, the FOLSOM TRAIL branding is made out of native Utah flowers and water to symbolize the ever-changing growth we go through in life.”

The mural creates immediate activation and beautification as efforts achieve the larger vision, including landscaping, trail-side amenities, and City Creek daylighting, in the next five to ten years. Additionally, it is expected this mural will stimulate further art and placemaking projects through the corridor in the near-term.

The project was successful in engaging with Salt Lake City’s west-side neighborhoods and involving community members from the neighborhood in the decision-making. Preference was given to west-side Salt Lake City-based artists or those with a connection to the neighborhood in the selection process. Thirty artists applied to the call for artists. Roots Art Kollective was selected in part due to their connection and strong ties to the neighborhood, along with their artistic excellence. The majority of the Selection Committee consisted of west-side organizations, community leaders, and those representing diverse races, ethnicities, and viewpoints.

The Folsom Trail Mural Project complimented larger engagement efforts on the City Creek at Folsom Trail Daylighting Design Plan by highlighting efforts, generating excitement, and building support—and will continue to do so into the future. Additionally, the Roots Art Kollective was compensated in the beautification of the community to generate neighborhood pride. In the design feedback stage of engagement, community members frequently highlighted the mural as an element that excited them and further art and placemaking in the corridor as an element they would like to see more of.

Roots Art Kollective to paint Folsom Trail Mural!

The Roots Art Kollective has been selected for the Folsom Trail Mural Project. They were chosen out of thirty unique proposals by the Selection Committee, which included representatives from the Poplar Grove Community Council, River District Business Alliance, Salt Lake City, Seven Canyons Trust, Utah Arts Alliance, and the property owner.

The Roots Art Kollective is composed of three Mexican American artists: Miguel Galaz, Alan Ochoa, and Luis Novoa. Their mission is to expand public art to create vibrant environments that allow people to learn about the cultures that enrich our communities. The artists began painting murals on Salt Lake City’s west-side in 2015 and formed Roots Art Kollective in 2019.

The artists have strong ties and personal connections to the Poplar Grove neighborhood, including childhood memories of Saturday morning shopping at La Diana Market and train watching along the Folsom corridor. They are honored to contribute a mural that will commemorate the vibrancy, creativity, and diversity of the neighborhood and personal experiences shared there.

The Kollective is “highly influenced by the natural world and our indigenous roots, often using organic geometry and symmetry to create balance and a feeling of familiarity. We believe that art can redefine the cultural spaces we embody through the use of nature, patterns, and calligraphy.”

Their mural aims to “be a tribute to the power and value of water. While emphasizing the beauty and diversity of the natural world and the interconnectedness of all living things.” Flowing water throughout will tie the piece together and represent the waters of City Creek. The mural will be painted with bright colors found in nature to create a vibrant addition to the Folsom Trail and Poplar Grove neighborhood.

The artwork is expected to be completed in August 2023 and will be unveiled during a community celebration of the City Creek at Folsom Trail Daylighting Design Plan planned for August 12th.

  • The City Creek at Folsom Trail project will revitalize a former rail corridor into a thriving ecosystem and community connection. It will create a beautiful, safe, and welcoming community centerpiece with more access to nature, improved water quality, and mitigated surface area flooding.

The Folsom rail line was rerouted as part of the Grants Tower/West Side Railroad Realignment project in 2008. The Interstate-15 overpass and renewed use of rail lines adjacent to the Folsom Corridor inhibit east-west connectivity, cutting off communities and creating dangerous encounters between people, cars, and trains. In 2012, an overflow culvert known as the Folsom Drain was placed down the corridor, beginning around 550 W North Temple and discharging into the Jordan River, to mitigate flooding.

Running from the North Temple FrontRunner commuter rail station to the Jordan River Trail, the Folsom Trail creates a safe, comfortable connection for access, recreation, celebration, learning, and enjoyment. It is located at approximately 50 South (between South Temple and 100 South) in Salt Lake City. West of Interstate-15, the trail follows a former railroad right-of-way. The current phase of the Folsom Trail, including installation of the paved trail, lighting, crossings, and some site furniture, was completed in December 2021.

The Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City, in partnership with the Seven Canyons Trust, is developing the City Creek at Folsom Trail Daylighting Design Plan—a community-based vision to daylight City Creek and add improvements along the Folsom Trail between 800 West and 1000 West in Salt Lake City. Daylighting is the uncovering of a stream previously buried in a pipe. City Creek was buried in a pipe underneath North Temple at the turn of the 20th Century.

The Folsom Trail Mural Project seeks an artist or artist-led team to create an outdoor mural along the blank wall at 25 S 1000 W, Salt Lake City, UT 84104. The artwork is intended to beautify the Folsom Trail corridor, represent the Euclid/Poplar Grove neighborhood, and acknowledge City Creek. It will contribute to the vibrancy, uniqueness, and creativity of the neighborhood while recognizing its historical character.

The artwork will complement engagement efforts on the Folsom Trail City Creek Daylighting Design Plan. The artist(s) is encouraged to consider community engagement strategies that can be incorporated into the City Creek at Folsom Trail Daylighting Design Plan process and community celebration and unveiling in August 2023.

A plaque will be installed on or near the artwork at the Seven Canyons Trust’s expense. It will include the artwork title, description, and credit to the artist. Placement and information on the plaque shall be made in consultation with the artist.

The Seven Canyons Trust is a nonprofit organization working to uncover and restore the buried and impaired creeks in the Salt Lake Valley.

  • This request for proposals is open to all artist and/or artist-led teams residing in Utah regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, socioeconomic status, education, marital status, language, age, gender, sexual orientation, political opinion and affiliation, and mental and physical ability. To be considered, artists must demonstrate their ability to accomplish the work required by this request and must use materials appropriate for Salt Lake City’s variable climate. Artists who reside in or have a connection to the Euclid/Poplar Grove neighborhood of Salt Lake City are encouraged to apply.

  • The total commission available is $15,000. This sum is inclusive of all fees and related expenses including, but not limited to, design, surface preparation, installation, materials, protective coating, travel expenses, hotels, meals, or any other costs incurred to perform the work. The artwork is not expected to cover the entire available wall, estimated at 20 feet high and 275 feet long. All or part of the wall may be used. The artist(s) should make an informed decision, based on industry compensation standards, on how much of the wall can be covered.

Upon installation, the artist or their agent must apply an approved non-sacrificial anti-graffiti coating over the entirety of the surface of the completed artwork at their own expense. The property owner shall be responsible for keeping the artwork free and clear of vandalism and protecting it from the passage of time and natural processes for as long as the artwork lasts up to and beyond five (5) years. The property owner may contract with the artist for a mutually agreed-upon fee or a third party for any such repair services. All repairs and restorations shall be made in accordance with recognized principles of conservation.
